Yvonne Venegas, born 1970 in Long Beach, CA.
Yvonne is a border artist who works with photography and drawing. She grew up in a
social photography studio in Tijuana, which gave her experience and an understanding of life that is linked to her interest in photography and people, as well as a life in
constant flux. Portraiture is the practice from which her research stems, centring on
the construction of identity, gender, communities and their territories.
She graduated from the International Centre of Photography in New York and obtained a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. She has exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, France, Italy, Canada, Poland and Russia. She has held solo exhibitions at the MUAC Museum of Contemporary Art, Casa de América in Madrid, the Carrillo Gil Art Museum, the Baxter Gallery in New York and at the European Photography Festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy, as well as in the exhibition El futuro no está escrito at the Marco Museum in Monterrey. Among other honours, she was awarded the 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship to carry out her project San Pedro Garza García, and in 2020 she received the acquisition prize from the Cuervo Foundation, support from the Jumex Foundation for her project El lápiz de la Naturaleza and the National System of Art Creators grant from FONCA for 2020–2023 for her project Gestos de Supervivencia.
She has published five monographs on her work: Maria Elvia de Hank (2010), Inédito (2012) Gestus, (2015), San Pedro Garza García (2018), y El Lápiz de la Naturaleza (2023) by RM Publishers and the catalogue for his exhibition Nunca será más joven que este día (2012, INBA), and the catalogue for the exhibition Días Únicos, published by the MUAC, 2019.
